Sending emails with foreign language content using Unitype Global Writer and Microsoft Outlook
There are essentially three ways that you can use Global Writer to convey multilingual content via Microsoft Outlook
- Copy and Paste from Global Writer to Microsoft Outlook
- Attaching a text file to Outlook.
- Attaching a Global Writer document to Outlook
Note: Upgrading to Unitype Global Office allows a more direct approach to enabling multilingual support in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Copy and Paste:
With the "Copy and Paste" system you type the text into Global Writer, Select it, Choose Edit / Copy (or Cont+C), then switch to the Microsoft Outlook email application and Choose the Edit / Paste function (or Cont+P). This will work with all the languages that use the "Times New Roman" typeface. These include Latin character set based languages like West, East and Central European plus Turkish and, Cyrillic languages like Russian and Ukrainian, in addition to Greek.
Chinese, Japanese, and Korean texts can also be copied, pasted, and transmitted via email, but the recipient will need to either install Global Writer or the appropriate Microsoft Internet Explorer Language support. (http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload)
Note: When copying and pasting Chinese, Japanese, or Korean it will be necessary to choose an appropriate typeface from the Microsoft Outlook format bar, otherwise, you will see gibberish characters. Depending on the recipients email client, it may be necessary for them to manually re-apply the appropriate typeface. To this effect, you may want to put a header note at the top of the email message instructing the user to select the appropriate typeface for proper viewing. Such issues are minimized if the recipient is using Outlook.
Advantages: When supported, this is the simplest approach to sending an email from Global Writer. The resulting email does not require attachments, and the recipient does not need Global Writer or any particular version of Windows.
Disadvantages: It does not work with a majority of Global Writer languages.
Text File Sent As an Attachment:
With the Text file system you save your original Global Writer document to a new Text file document, then choose (F5) File / Send Email. Note. This system will only work with a few languages, and will only be readable on systems that support that language. For example, this system would work to convey Thai language text to someone using Thai Windows, but it will not work to convey Thai text to someone in Australia, unless they happen to have a Thai Windows machine or an application capable of reading Thai text files.There are a number of languages for which this "Text" based system will work. These are the languages for which there is a text import/export filter in Global Writer. These are Arabic, Baltic languages, Central European languages, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Turkish, Western European languages, and Vietnamese. Be sure to select the correct filter when saving data to text format. If you choose the wrong filter, you will corrupt the document. To minimize such risk, we advise that you maintain an original GW file in addition to the "exported" text file document.
Advantages: When supported, this system does not require that the receiver own Global Writer and it supports many languages.
Disadvantages: Formatting is lost. Only certain recipients that have special foreign language versions of Windows will be able to view documents sent in this manner.
Global Writer File Sent as an Attachment:
The last system involves sending a proprietary format Global Writer document as an attachment.Simply save your Global Writer file, then click choose File / Send Email (F5). If your system is configured for MAPI, Outlook (or another email client) will be launched with your Global Writer file already inserted as an attachment to a blank email message. If your system is not configured for MAPI, you can simply start a new message in Outlook, choose Insert / File, browse to the appropriate directory, and select the Global Writer document to be sent.
Advantage: All formats are preserved. And all languages can be sent.
Disadvantage: This will only work if the person receiving the email also owns Global Writer and has installed all the necessary languages.
